Real Estate Students Learn from the Pros
From tips on making it in the world of commercial lending to the essentials of property management, students interested in commercial real estate received expert advice from local and regional industry leaders at The Many Facets of Real Estate Forum held on September 14. More than 50 students from real estate courses were invited to attend the forum and luncheon, where they listened to and asked questions of seven high-level executives in the real estate industry.
“It is beneficial to hear from real estate professionals about what industry trends they are experiencing and predicting. I feel it gives me insight most students, and even some professionals, do not have,” says Jon Galloway, a Crosby MBA student.
The forum was sponsored by the Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate, which aims to prepare future leaders in commercial real estate development, management, and related financial services by providing world-class educational, research, and professional opportunities for MU students. One way the institute hopes to accomplish these tasks is to arrange and sponsor guest speakers from the real estate industry.

Other presenters at the forum included:
- Otto Maly, Maly Commercial Realty, Columbia, keynote speaker
- Jerry Fogel, Kessinger/Hunter, Kansas City
- Brandon Mann, Colliers Turley Martin Tucker, St. Louis
- Bruce Mills, Mill Properties, St. Louis
- Nanci Napoli, First American Title Insurance, St. Louis

According to Sam Goldman, director of the Smith Institute and organizer of The Many Facets of Real Estate Forum, "Based on the success of the forum, I'm sure it will become an annual event." The next Jeffrey E. Smith Institute of Real Estate Forum, which features nationally recognized real estate executives, will be held on April 4, 2008, on the MU campus.
