Student Team Wins St. Louis Regional CFA Institute Research Challenge

[St. Louis, MO February 17, 2012] The CFA Society of St. Louis recently announced the University of Missouri Trulaske College of Business team won the CFA Institute Research Challenge, now advancing to the Americas Regional Challenge where it will compete against other universities from the United States, Canada and South America.

Each university sent a team of three-to-five students to participate in the Research Challenge, which is administered by the CFA Institute, a global association of investment professionals. The St. Louis Regional competition was the first step of two for the University of Missouri to advance towards the global finale in New York.

MU's team members Scott Thelen, Paul Abrogouah, Jeff Boyce and Hoc Phan proudly bring home the honors. Faculty members Michael O'Doherty, Shastri Sandy, and John Stansfield led the team to first place.

The students will now travel to the Americas Regional Challenge, held on April 9-10, 2012 in New York, where they will match their wits, analytical skills and presentation abilities against other student teams. The winners of the four Regional Challenges - Americas, New York, Europe, and Asia Pacific - will then advance to compete in the Research Challenge finale in New York on April 11, 2012.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge offers the students a unique opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and peers at top business schools from around the world. This annual educational initiative is designed to promote best practices through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. This year, more than 100 CFA Institute member societies will host local competitions with more than 2,500 students and 500 universities worldwide.

"I am so proud of the Trulaske College of Business CFA students for their accomplishments in St. Louis," said Michael O'Doherty, Assistant Professor of Finance at the Trulaske College of Business, "We will continue to develop our company analysis and presentation skills in the coming weeks as we prepare for the Americas Regional Challenge."

The students presented their buy/sell/hold recommendations and their analysis on Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. Their presentation at the St. Louis Regional finale was the culmination of three months of research, interviews with company management, competitors, and clients, presentation training, and evaluation.
