PhD Concentration in Management

PhD students with a concentration in organizational sciences prepare a program of study subject to the approval of their doctoral program committees.  The program includes a business core of at least 15 hours, at least 15 hours of doctoral seminars in organizational sciences, one 12-hour or two 9-hour support areas, and a minimum of 12 hours in research methods and statistics (18 hours with one 12-hour support area).  Students typically work as research or teaching assistants and receive direct support which includes a full tuition waiver.  The PhD program in organizational sciences is designed to provide students with a sound foundation for a productive career as an academic in management.

The Department of Management welcomes applications for entry into the PhD program for the fall semester (beginning in August). The application deadline for full consideration is February 1, but applications that arrive after that date may be considered.  We encourage all applicants to consider making a visit to campus to meet departmental faculty and current management doctoral students. Business Background (minimum 15 hours)

All doctoral students in the School of Business must take (or be able to waive) the following courses:

Organizational Sciences Concentration (minimum 15 hours)

PhD students in the organizational sciences track are required to take four core seminars, and 3 credits of additional seminars that will be offered to match the needs and interests of current students. The four core seminars are:

Seminar in Strategic Management
Seminar in Entrepreneurship

Support Areas

Support areas are tailored to the research and teaching goals of the PhD candidate. Programs are highly individualized to reflect student interests and desired focus. Listed below are examples of support areas that could be selected. Students have two general options for choosing their support areas. Students can choose (1) one support area of 12 hours and an 18-hour research methods and analysis area, or (2) two support areas of  9 hours each and a 12-hour research methods and analysis area. The combination of courses in any support area and in the organizational sciences core is flexible, with numerous combinations possible, in addition to those shown below. Program design considers the student goals and academic background and is subject to the approval of the student's doctoral program committee. Typical support areas for management doctoral students include psychology, finance/economics, research methods and statistics, career development, sociology, marketing, and communication.
